Margate Dune Building Update 7.17.2017. Swimming Still Affected by Bacteria

Margate beaches along the northern end of town entering the final phase of dune building and beach widening.

Dredge pipes are being disconnected and prepared for their move down the beach to the next work location. The off shore dredge will follow. Dune cross-overs and pathways will be built by another team. Dune work will soon start near Essex Ave and the Margate Pier.

As of July 17, swimming between Fredericksburg and the Margate Pier was still prohibited. So far, that’s 7 days of no swimming due to a mix of heavy machinery and elevated levels of bacteria.

Beaches between Washington Aven in Ventnor, all the way down to Essex Avenue in Margate…are disrupted in some way , shape or form.

On the back-half of the beach, the ‘dead zone’ between the new dune and bulkheads, the sand is wet and swampy. That’s because the grade level was lowered. We were told this allows for ‘better drainage’. We struggle with that answer. Watch Video>

Saturday July 15 was the first time we saw signs, big and bright, telling people NO SWIMMING in certain areas. For the most part that’s from Fredericksburg Avenue on the border of Margate and Ventnor, all the way down to about Essex Avenue in Margate. Swimming is permitted at Huntington (Library) and all points south. Surfing is OK at Margate Pier.
