Efforts underway to make Margate a little greener. A community forestry management plan has been pre-funded with a $3,000 grant from the New Jersey Forestry Service.
A certified arborist for Margate City has been hired with objectives including:
- Recommendation of tree species planting list
- Develop plan for maintaining urban tree canopy
- Public education and awareness
- Tree maintenance and removal
- Taking tree inventory
- Community forestry ordinance
As a beach town built on sand and surrounded by salt water, why would Margate study trees? For the environmental and economic benefits to the Margate community. Studies show that:
- Trees attract business & shoppers
- Homeowners enjoy higher property values. Homes sell faster too
- Trees cool Margate in summer. Savings in utility costs. Shade over a home can reduce energy bills by $250
- Trees clean the environment, assist in drainage, absorb pollutants in the sewer systems.
- Absorption of water, preventing sewer overflow. Saves millions of dollars in water treatment costs.
- Trees help roadways last decades longer.
By having a state approved tree plan, Margate will have access to the NJ Shade Tree & Community Forestry Assistance Act.
