Longport Adding Bigger Boulders to Protect Against Storms

Longport is surrounding it’s southernmost tip with even more, massive boulders. The hope is that a more formidable rock wall will help protect the tiny borough from storms.

Also known as a ‘rock revetment’ project, the stone barriers should help reduce damage to a town that’s surrounded by water on three sides.

“Revetment” is a process of installing massive jetty rocks and other structures to protect against storms and the crashing waves they produce.

Revetments are a relatively low-cost solution for coastal erosion defense in areas like Longport, where crashing waves could deplete the coastline. Revetments disrupt the force of water.

Ever wonder why Longport starts at 11th street? Take a guess.

Longport Revetment and Storm Protection Plan

According to ShoreNewsToday, the DEP Division of Coastal Engineering is extending the revetment area 10 feet out and about 3 feet higher at three sites: the jetty at Atlantic Avenue, along the existing revetment next to the oceanfront homes on Longport Point Drive and the 11th Avenue groin.

The large boulders will help with front ocean storm surge. Sadly, these huge rock barriers won’t play any role in stopping damage from tidal and back-bay flooding.
