Ventnor Catches Dune Break, Margate Still Hosed for Late Summer 2017

Here’s the latest, updated DREDGE & DUNE DUMP schedule for Summer 2017. Wow. Ventnor gets a major hook-up and Margate is still hosed.

  • Atlantic City – April 21, 2017- July 9, 2017
  • Longport – May 28, 2017- August 7, 2017
  • Margate – August 7, 2017 – October 16, 2017
  • Ventnor – October 16, 2017 – November 30, 2017

In Ventnor, Margate and Longport, dune elevation will be 13 feet high. In Atlantic City, dunes are a crazy high of almost 15ft.

This Absecon Island project is said to be designed as a way to reduce storm damages to homes from waves, high tides and storm surges. Sadly, most flooding in Margate & Ventnor is due to back-bay surge, which has yet to be earnestly addressed by those in charge of this chronically expensive effort.

Fishermen and wildlife enthusiasts claim that coastal dredging destroys marine habitat and plays a detrimental role in the decline of recreational fishing in South Jersey.

The dune building operation will shut down 1,000 feet of beach at a time. Once finished with a particular section, they’ll move to the next 1,000 feet of beach front. Equipment storage for bulldozers and other heavy equipment will be included in that closed off section of beach.

The Downbeach Dune & Beachfill project will run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Dredges will be anchored just offshore…. about a mile & a half from the Atlantic City, Ventnor & Longport beaches & shore line.

  1. In 1994 LoBiondo was for term limits and said he would only serve for 10 years. I guess that was the time needed for a lifetime pension. Now 23 years later he’s still in office. He serves on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee which directly oversees projects like the dune construction and the Army Corps of Engineers. His wife is a Ventnor realtor so perhaps she assists with a few Ventnor rental properties and those renters were up in arms about losing the summer to dune construction. Do you think the company that gets paid by the committee he is a member of might reconsider what they’re doing? Could it be corruption or just coincidence?
