Classic Margate: Red Klotz, Globetrotters, Ivory & Reds Nightclub

Margate’s own “Red Klotz” is a basketball legend. Louis Herman “Red” Klotz passed away on July 12, 2014, but left behind quite the legacy.

Klotz built, managed, played and coached The Washington Generals.

The Generals were traveling opposition to the world-famous, Harlem Globetrotters.

The Washington Generals lost most of their games to the funny and fast-paced Globetrotters.

Somebody had to lose, so Red Klotz built a successful business of losing to Meadowlark Lemon and the Harlem Globetrotters.

Standing just 5ft-7in, Red is still the shortest player to win an NBA championship—with the 1948 Baltimore Bullets.

  1. Wish I had seen my cousin Marvin Becker in the video. Marvin passed very recently. He toured with the Trotters when I was a young teenager. A great basketball player in his own rite.

    1. Mathew D Finkelson

Marvin was a true mentsh; kind to all, a heart of gold, not a mean bone in his body. People like him are a rarity.

  2. Harry Sigel, Boynton Beach FL

I miss the days of the old school places like REDS and MALONEY’S
Not to mention the LONGPORT INN, as well as Glenning’s SAILFISH CAFE
