After 7 strong years, Water Dog Smoke House will transition away from its brick-and-mortar location at 7319 Ventnor Avenue, Ventnor.

The space (a former bank) on the border of Ventnor and Margate will be taken over by Kismet Bagels Luncheonette, a popular Philadelphia eatery.

The owner of Water Dog Smoke House is Steve Marchel.

Why the change? Fast-rising operational costs.

Philly.com: Owner Steve Marcel said he has faced “the reality that costs to maintain a physical location have gone through the roof in the last couple years.”

Marchel will now focus on his Water Dog catering, food truck services and online sales.

ALSO…. Marchel still optimistic about his upcoming Betty’s BBQ & Fried Chicken on the Margate waterfront along Amherst Ave.

Betty’s BBQ & Fried Chicken is set to open on April 25, right next door to Betty’s Seafood Shack.

Costs of maintaining a physical location hurting most local, Downbeach business. Lack of year-round residents makes matters worse. Finding employees not easy. Especially local workers. Operating costs have gone through the roof in the last few years. Insurance, workers comp, health, have doubled.

  1. Waterdog will be sorely missed! It instantly became a wonderful go-to eatery, perfect for the shore. Great food, smoked specialties, poke, and excellent service—a Dan Greenberg creation.

  2. Sounds “Contradictory”????

    Having “TWO” Locations Bayside;
    ( Especially Their Location)
    “Operational Costs” must be Off the Wall compared to a property that has been existing on Ventnor Ave for several years….. ??????
