Grossman: Increase NJ Nuclear Capacity for Cheap Energy

We need new power plants to stop more rate hikes and avoid massive power failures like those in Puerto Rico and Europe.

Atlantic City Electric raised its rates 20% last year, and proved need for a 17% increase this year.

Why are we paying more? Governor Murphy shut down 6 NJ power plants during the past seven years.

One was at Beesleys Point in Upper Township

Another was the Oyster Creek nuclear plant in Lacey Township. Since those shut downs, every electric company in NJ now buys much of its electricity at very high prices from out of state. This causes big rate hikes.

Murphy now wants electric bills based on “family income” instead of cost. That way, only businesses, government agencies, and high and middle-income families pay the full cost of expensive electricity.

We need more electricity to power electric cars and Artificial Intelligence. We urgently need new power plants.

The two nuclear reactors at Salem supply 42% of New Jersey’s electricity.

New Jersey has 10th highest electric rates in America.

Natural gas produces 49% of New Jersey’s electricity.

Utility companies forced to pay top retail prices for 7% of electricity from solar panels.

Sunlight in New Jersey is unpredictable and intermittent. Much of its electricity is produced when not needed and is wasted.

Atlantic City Electric installed “smart” meters. It can now instantly cut off power to any customer it chooses, from its home office.

How to fix this energy problem? Replace the 6 power plants that Gov Murphy shut down and then, build more.

The quickest and cheapest site for a new power plant is Beesleys Point in Upper Township. It was safely used as a power plant since 1962. All needed permits, environmental approvals, transformers, and transmission lines are already in place.

A power plant at Beesleys Point plant can be fueled by cheap, safe and abundant natural gas from Pennsylvania.

The current owners of the Beesley’s Point site want to build 768 homes there. It would condemn the entire state to endless rate hikes and the power failures. It would cause massive local tax hikes to fund public schools, police protection and new water and sewer service.

New Jersey made big mistakes with energy during the past ten years. Hundreds of millions of dollars for useless wind turbine and solar projects.

NJ let woke activists stop South Jersey Gas from building a 22 mile natural gas pipeline under existing roads to Millville.

The shut down of Beesleys Point plant in 2019. Climate activists cheered when they completely destroyed the cooling tower, boilers, and smokestack.

  1. “Activists” have helped kill windfarms over unproven allegations about whale deaths and EMGs. Those same instant, faux-environmentalists are now going to welcome nuclear with its KNOWN issues with open arms ? Maybe we can have our own versions of 3 Mile Island and Chernobyl here?

I was a member of the first nuclear operators at Salem #1, and later Salem #2. I loaded the 1st reactor core and remained in operations dept for 9 years.
What I know as a fact, and the quiet 800lb gorilla at Salem, is the constant destruction of tens of thousands…perhaps millions…of immature hatchling fish of all species coming down the New Jersey tidal grass shoreline only to die at both Salem cooling water intakes. Wind turbines could greatly reduce the killing during peak hatching times.
