The Museum

Established in 1855, the Atlantic City Beach Patrol is the oldest operational lifeguard organization in the United States, making Atlantic City an ideal home for the Museum.

The International Lifeguard Museum is dedicated to highlighting the vital role of lifeguards as essential first responders through education, art, and immersive experiences.

My father, Arthur, dedicated his life to the Atlantic City Beach Patrol. For 37 years he served as a guardian of our waters. As Chief and Superintendent he helped develop the high-standards for lifeguards in swimming skills, physical fitness, and rescue techniques.

Chris Brown, Board President.

Arthur Brown took great pride in the Atlantic City Beach Patrol and aimed to develop not just physical strength but also mental and spiritual resilience in the lifeguards.

He emphasized respect for the ocean and the serious responsibility of saving lives, reminding us always of the gravity of our duties.

Rusty’s creative eye has allowed me to realize through his camera’s lens, the dynamic life and culture of what responsibilities life guards live with and fully embrace. In Rusty’s book, Lifeguard Art, his photos bring to life the activities and experiences lifeguards must live with.

This will be a great place to show the public the importance of supporting a Beach Patrol. Lifeguards are a dedicated group of Men and Women who many times risk their own lives for the safety of others. I know from experience that being on a beach patrol forms a lifelong bond between yourself and the people you have worked with. As they say “Our memories of the ocean will linger on, long after our footprints in the sand are gone”
