Margate Authorizes Another $100,000 to Fight Dune

Back in 2014, Margate voters OK’d spending $200,000 to fight the dune project. Recently, Margate Commissioners authorized another $100,000 to push back against the state’s dune demand.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection wants to build one giant sand dune from Absecon Inlet to Great Egg Harbor Bay. Eminent domain would be needed.

A majority of voters in Margate do not want sand dunes on the beach.

Judge Julio Mendez will soon decide on whether NJ has legal authority to take easements without updating engineering studies for the Army Corps of Engineers

NJ State says using eminent domain is for the public good. Two witnesses who don’t agree with the state, testified that the Army Corps didn’t use current science and standards when it studied the Absecon Island Shore Protection Project.
