Margate Commisioner: We Will Not Burden Taxpayers With Dune Bills.

Listen to Audio > Margate Commissioner John Amodeo spoke about the disruptive dune building, as he called into WOND Radio on Friday. Amodeo told host Don Williams that sand pumping is moving at ‘a snail’s pace’, finishing 100 feet of work per day, rather than 200 feet as originally planned. Instead of 37 days, work will now take about 60 to 70 days in Margate.

‘Mid-summer dune-building is a nightmare’ says Margate Commissioner Amodeo, a former NJ Assemblyman.

Margate thrives in the summer. Those 8 to 10 weeks are critical for our businesses, our residents and visitors that spend money.

Amodeo: ‘Margate, unlike Ventnor and Longport, will never engage in any signed agreement to pursue replenishment programs, where the burden of cost goes to taxpayers. Unless the federal government fully pays and subsidizes replenishment, Margate will not pay for that type of work.’

Note: Ventnor will need to borrow / bond, in order to pay approximately $450,000 every three years, for mandatory dune replenishment, whether the beaches need it, or not.

Amodeo was concerned about safety and convenience. That didn’t matter though. The NJ Governor had the right, by executive order, to force & mandate dunes.

  1. Beach replenishment helps protect ALL the local properties and beaches. Unless it’s done universally, a piece-meal project will not be effective. Are we so far removed from Hurricane Sandy that we don’t recall the lessons learned?
