Margate OK’s Jitneys for Summer 2016

Margate Commissioners OK’ed trial run of the popular Jitney buses for Summer 2016. A Jitney route will run through Margate City on a trial basis for now. The natural gas-powered and green friendly service will ultimately connect Atlantic City with Ventnor and Margate. Smart. Maybe Brigantine will wake up to this benefit one day. Well, we’re not holding our breath on that one.

Commissioner of Public Safety Amodeo felt Margate pick-up & drop-off points might create safety & noise problems.

Solution: Stops will happen in commercial areas only…..in front of Atlantic Ave. banks, Lucy the Elephant and the popular restaurants along the bay at Amherst Avenue. Imagine grabbing a cocktail a Borgata’s Gypsy Bar at 8, then hopping a Jitney for a little dancing with The Geator at Memories in Margate. Nice.

The Downbeach Jitney service will run thru Margate from 10a to 1a.

Larry Campbell; a Real Estate agent with Balsley Losco in Margate, was not a fan of those who called Jitneys…’drunk buses’.

If you want to call it a drunk bus….. then that’s fine. It’s better than someone getting hurt or killed.

The route is scheduled to go into effect on Thursday, May 26. It will run Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays. The trial will extend til Wednesday, July 13. If all goes well, Downbeach Jitneys will continue thru the rest of the summer.

Margate & Downbeach Jitney Fares

  • $3 from 10a – 10p
  • $4 from 10p – 1a

Approval now looks more promising for Jitney stops in Ventnor too. New Ventnor commissioners will get to decide that one. NOTE: The Imagine Ventnor team of Maccagnano, Kriebel & Landgraf have already said they would green light the Jitneys when elected.
