NJ DEP Rules Could Chase Away Homeowners from Jersey Shore

DEP Rules Homeowners Jersey Shore. Ventnor.

NJ Assemblyman Paul Kanitra blasted the last-minute, controversial land-use regulations adopted by the DEP on Gov. Phil Murphy’s final day in office.

A concentrated effort by state government to force people out of their homes and impose costly burdens on longtime residents of coastal towns.

NJ Assemblyman Paul Kanitra: These DEP regulations are a manifestation of the “managed retreat” concept detailed in the 2021 NJ Climate Resilience Strategy. This makes coastal living prohibitively expensive. The DEP is effectively enforcing a “de facto” retreat policy.

Kanitra concludes with a stark warning to Jersey Shore residents: “Buckle up… you’re all going to have to move”.

The expanded flood zones under the rules require existing residents to purchase additional insurance and elevate homes above even FEMA’s regulations if they need to make repairs above 50% of the home’s value.

Ventnor’s Landgraf and Margate’s Collins only care about tax ratables. Build. Tear down. Build. Minimal setback. Spot zoning.

A former DEP commissioner explains the environmental protection strategy called “managed retreat” that encourages people to move away from their shore communities.

New Jersey Assemblyman Paul Kanitra confronts the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.

DEP new rules impose immediate and expensive mandates on coastal property owners. Requirement that homes be elevated if renovations exceed 50% of the building’s value within a five-year window.

Patrick Cleland Increasing flood zones has more to do with over-development than it does with “rising seas”. More costal flooding due to development in low lying areas that used to be swamp/water basins, being built up and pushing that water into surrounding areas. Beaches erode and rebuild. Sea level remains the same. It’s all a money grab when it comes to legislation and code revisions.

Mary Lynn Burkart-Reardon Retreat so the rich can take your property and make it their own. Sounds like the plan to me. California and Hawaii just burned it down. Gotta love NJ they just tell you get the F out.

Rick Bandazian An average sized house to raise is about $180,000. And yes, that poor old lady won’t be able to afford it, but won’t be able to climb the stairs to get into it either.

Bob Fitzsimmons A land grab. They want to use this tactic to force people out of their homes and not be able to legally afford to renovate them.
