PODCAST: Margate Solicitor Shares Struggle to Reclaim Back Bay

DownbeachBUZZ podcast featuring Margate City Solicitor Scott Abbott. Critical update on long-stalled city-wide dredging project.

DREDGING PERMITS RECEIVED. Abbott details legal and logistical hurdles involved in maintaining the navigability of Margate’s back-bay lagoons and canals.

Does Margate beach replenishment increase back-bay clogging?

Dredging maintenance plan needed.

Without recently received Army Corp and NJ DEP permits, the back bays are becoming increasingly impassable, posing safety threats, potentially harming property values and local marina businesses.

City-Wide Permit Benefits: Homeowners can dredge their own boat slips under city’s umbrella permit, saving individual owners thousands of dollars in separate permitting fees and months of administrative delays.

The Shelter Island Struggle. Trucking dredge materials off-site—the current state-suggested alternative—is expensive. Would prefer SHELTER ISLAND behind Ventnor.

Dunes too high. 95% of Hurricane Sandy insurance claims came from back-bay homes.

Dunes blocking view of beach and ocean is a BIG mistake.

Front-beach replenishment sand eventually finds heads to back channels. Causing clogs. Poor navigation at low tide. Dangerous.

History of using dredge materials to raise portions of Absecon Island. Creation of Amherst Ave.

  1. Sadly, we can’t get our streets salted unless your a Main Street or an emergency street in Margate. Why? salt is expensive that said and we never did that before!

They told us to get our cars off the street so they can clear them. You mean plow us in with snow turning to freezing ice and we can’t get out for work . What are they thinking ?

Money is now a concern with all their purchases; gas stations, changing the direction of Washington Ave , the list goes on.

How are we to get to work with icy roads and hostage to our garage – YOU plowed us IN.

    Shame on you.

And you want a new building maintenance office, at our expense and you can’t handle snow or ensure our physical safety.

Disgrace .. look on line everyone is complaining .

    1. More of the same. The sidewalks of the “privileged” out of towners don’t have to be cleared?
Even the mayor of D.C. is fining people for not shoveling walk ways.

  2. Someone needs to direct the plow operator. As he is plowing down our street, the blade is turned to the drivers left.

The problem is, the left side had six cars parked and the right side had two. How about turning the plow to the right, where only two cars are effected but the plow.
