PODCAST: Veterans Win Another Summer of Ventnor Beach Ice Cream Sales

Ventnor New Jersey Mayor Holtzman

Facing a potential flood of angry vets, the 3 Ventnor Commissioners walked back talk of possibly changing the way ice cream is sold on the beach.

On Thursday evening, March 8, it was agreed to let veterans keep control over ice cream sales.

Ventnor Police Chief Doug Biagi, an equally strong supporter of veterans, held firm on his conviction that beach vendors need to follow the rules and serve the public. Biagi doesn’t want to see any territory battles on the beach this summer. WATCH VIDEO from WE LOVE VENTNOR >

LISTEN: King Arthur Radio > Veterans Beach Ice Cream Deal in Ventnor:

Looking for untapped revenue, Commissioner Tim Kriebel proposed changes in the beach vending license ordinance. Why not let the city go out to bid for a single, beach ice cream contract?

Some radio DJ’s called the Ventnor commissioners “idiots” and “dumb and dumber”. This started an unnecessary, social media attack on differing viewpoints.

Last year, the city collected $825 for 15 licenses they issued to veterans. Four vets were from Ventnor. Next door in Margate, they often pull in approx $100k in bidding out a summer, beach ice cream contract.

Ventnor Mayor, Beth Holtzman, has been known to fire back hard when attacked. Residents who voice uncomfortable public comments often face commissioner scorn. Holtzman took time to lash out to those who accused the commissioners of being unpatriotic.

Some have suggested tweaks to the current ordinance. Maybe a specific territory for each vendor? Maybe an approved, colorful, Ventnor ice cream t-shirt to ensure compliance with dress code requirements?

  1. My comments are not intended to bully anyone. I believe that the issues with the ice cream vendors could have been handled by all of them meeting with the Police and the commissioner. Since they know who the vendors were that caused a problem why not call them in to meet and discuss the issues? I feel that by the police chief publicly spending over 8 minutes chastising the vendors was unnecessary. First he said he planned to call them all in for a meeting to go over the rules, which I think is a positive, mature step. Then after reprimanding them over and over, but assuring them that he loved them, and then continuing the reprimand, he finished by saying he’s done with them. You state that you know who were the vendors are who are the problem yet why did you chose this open public forum to to reprimand all of them. So what is the Police Chief going to do? Have a meeting with all vendors or is he really done with dealing with them. I think he spoke in a very unprofessional manner.
All that being said, I thank the commissioner for working out a solution that will hopefully benefit everyone. Thank you all for your service to our community.
By the way, since the Mayor brought up the beach tag checkers, I was on my beach almost everyday and was not once asked to see my beach tag. The Mayor personality told me, when I was buying 10 tags, that she was going to have the checkers stationed at the steps checking people as they got onto the beach. Never saw anyone. I have to ask myself why even buy them?
