Mid-September is delivering peak late-summer transition energy across our barrier islands. With the official closure of the New Jersey summer flounder (fluke) season set for September 25, the countdown is down to just over a week.

At the same time, the fall mullet run has shifted into a higher gear, weakfish are making a solid late-season showing, and the inshore speedsters are keeping light-tackle anglers running the beachfronts.

Current Water Conditions & Bait Movements

  • Water Temps: Oceanfront surface temperatures off the Ventnor Pier and Atlantic City beachfront are holding around 68 degrees. Back-bay channels behind Ventnor and Margate range from 68 on incoming ocean tides to 72 on the afternoon outgoing tides.
  • Active Bait: Finger mullet are streaming out of back-bay feeder creeks and marsh guts, staging along the sod banks and moving toward the inlet mouths. Thick schools of 3- to 4-inch peanut bunker, spearing, and bay anchovies are blanketing the back thorofares and boiling in the surf wash, triggering surface blitzes at dawn and dusk.

Back Bays & Margate (Scott’s Dock Report)

Intel from Scott’s Dock in Margate highlights that while short fluke still dominate the numbers in shallow water, keeper hunters are zeroing in on moving water in the deepest channels.

  • Final-Stretch Fluke Strategy: With days remaining in the season, rental skiffs and the Captain Robin pontoon boat are working the 12- to 18-foot drops near the main thorofares and cuts leading toward the inlets. To cull out keepers to 4 pounds among the abundant shorts, drift live finger mullet (easily caught with a cast net along the marsh banks) on a fish-finder rig, or bounce 5- to 6-inch Berkley Gulp! Grubs tipped with long, tapered strips of fresh mackerel or bluefish belly.
  • Backwater Weakfish & Stripers: Weakfish up to 18 inches have pushed into the back channels behind Downbeach, hitting pink/white soft plastics or live minnows. After dark, schoolie-to-slot striped bass are popping bait along lighted bridge pilings and shadow seams.
  • Bridge & Bulkhead Structure: Sheepshead are still providing hard-nosed battles around local bridge pilings, taking fiddler crabs and live sand fleas during slack water. Note: Black sea bass re-opens on September 23 with a 10-fish bag limit, adding immediate late-season incentive for local structure and reef fishing.

Inlets & Surf: Ventnor, Atlantic City, & Brigantine

  • Ventnor Pier & Surf: Beach and pier anglers are seeing steady light-tackle action on kingfish, croakers, and spot using high-low rigs tipped with bloodworms or Fishbites. At sunrise, schools of bonito, Spanish mackerel, and false albacore are making fast runs through the outer bar.
  • Atlantic City: Absecon Inlet jetties are producing cocktail bluefish and keeper tautog (1-fish limit, 15-inch minimum) on green crabs. Offshore at the Atlantic City Reef site (60–85 feet), boaters are finding the highest keeper-to-short fluke ratio of the season, along with triggerfish and porgies (scup season opened with a 30-fish limit).
  • Brigantine Beach: Surfcasters drifting live finger mullet on a modified fish-finder rig or casting swimming plugs are connecting with slot striped bass and bluefish pushing bait tightly into the suds.
