Ventnor Considers New Landscaping Rules

Ventnor may have new requirements for landscaping. An ordinance encouraging native species may be on the table at the next commission meeting.

‘The proposed ordinance updates Ventnor’s current landscaping ordinance’, said Mayor Mike Bagnell. There could be new requirements for the number of trees and shrubs planted on certain sized lots too.

“We need to get indigenous species back into the city,” Bagnell said. “We’re recommending plants that we believe are beneficial, and discouraging plants we believe are harmful, like bamboo.”

Bamboo is highly invasive and is prohibited under the new ordinance. White oak trees, sycamore and the American elm are some of the large trees recommended. The Ventnor city clerk said the landscaping ordinance, with minor amendments, could be introduced this week.
