Ventnor Firefighter Union Agrees to New Contract Terms with City

The City of Ventnor & it’s firefighter union have agreed to a new contract. While there is an increase in pay, business administrator Maria Mento said the city will save money over the life of each employee.

The existing Ventnor Firefighter Union contract expired on Dec. 31, 2016.

The new contract eliminates longevity pay for new hires. Veterans will have their longevity bonus converted from a %, to a fixed amount. The increased number of steps on the salary guide will increase from six to 14. Terminal leave will be capped at $30,000 starting next year.

End-of-career cash payouts will get new caps and will make some seriously consider retiring sooner that later.

Ventnor firefighters who retire by July 1, 2017 can receive up to $80k in ‘Terminal’ leave. Those who retire between July 1 and Dec. 31, 2017 will be capped at $50k. As of Jan. 1, 2018, that number drops to $30k.
