Will Margate Dune Building Melt Ice Cream Man’s Profit?

Will peak-of-summer-season dredging & dune building affect the Margate ice cream man? The guy who’s been selling summertime treats for the past 10 years… says YES.

A check for $93,000 was written, signed & delivered to Margate City Hall by ice cream vendor Paul Van DeRijn. ( See document below) That’s what it cost this particular vendor for the rights to sell ice cream on the Margate beaches for Summer 2017.

Can Margate leaders offer a discount (show some mercy) for the loss in ice cream sales he may encounter due to dune disruptions on the beach this summer? “How can I make money with that noise, diesel smoke & smell on the Margate beaches?”

Even with 1,000 ft. fenced off, up to 2,000 ft will be affected at a time. It’s his bread & butter….the summer. “I don’t have beach to sell ice cream on”, says Paul. “The beach may not be viable.”

Ice Cream Man Concerned About Margate Dune Building

Van DeRijn recollected his contract with Atlantic City last summer where he lost money to due to beach closures there.

JULY 20…the dreaded dune & dredge project will start in Margate.

On June 11, Ventnor will enjoy the diesel show. Indeed, other business will be affected, says Margate Commisioner John Amodeo. Selling beach chairs…etc.
