Officer-Involved Shooting in Longport

The Longport Police Department is issuing this press release to inform the public about an incident involving an officer-involved shooting within a residence. We want to emphasize that, thankfully, no individuals were struck or injured during the incident.

At approximately 11:42 AM on Saturday, December 2, 2023, Longport police officers responded to a residence in response to a welfare check on an individual who had not been heard from in several days.

In the course of the response, an officer-involved shooting occurred. The details involving the shooting have not been determined at this time.

The investigation into this incident is being conducted by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, which will conduct a thorough and impartial review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The Longport Police Department is fully cooperating with the prosecutor’s office during this process.

Longport Police Chief Frank Culmone stated, “The safety and well-being of our community are our top priorities. We are committed to transparency and accountability in all police matters. We understand the concerns this incident may raise and assure the public that a comprehensive investigation is underway.”

The Chief also emphasized that additional details will be provided to the public at the conclusion of the investigation. This ensures that all facts are gathered, and the community receives accurate and complete information.

  1. The officers video has been posted on social media. My first question to LPD is, does this officer needs more training?

    He discharged his weapon, at the home owner, luckily missing him. The officer was announcing his presence. The home owner, awakened from sleep, comes into view from down the hall. Apparently, scares the officer, because the officer yelled out in fear, discharged his firearm while bringing it up from his side.

    His weapon was already out of the holster. A trained officer would have Never discharged his weapon in that instance. But……this too will be swept under the rug.
