Ventnor City To Talk Single-Use Plastic Bags on April 14

Single use plastic bags are easy, cheap & convenient for shopping… but nasty for beaches, marine life & waterways.

Margate, Ventnor, Longport & Brigantine are debating single-use plastic bags.

Discarded single use plastic bags are harmful to sea life. This plastic never really goes away. Overtime, it may break down into tiny pieces eaten by a variety of sea critters. Sadly, it then works its way into the food chain….and potentially into our bodies.

Sea-life often eat the floating trash, mistaking it for a tasty jellyfish. Yum. Alas, the plastic gets stuck in their stomach. This eventually kills the whale, dolphin, turtle or gull.

FACT: single use plastic bags are NOT recyclable.

The City of Ventnor is considering an ordinance that would put a fee on plastic bags. A discussion of such an ordinance is scheduled to take place at the next commission workshop meeting 4 p.m. Thursday, April 14.

Ventnor wants to know: should we reduce or eliminate those single use plastic bags?

A future public meeting will be held to discuss the history of bag legislation, and why some actions work and others do not.

Longport has already taken action to protect our coastline. Longport Mayor Russo stepped up early, motivated by what he found while investigating pollution while he was in law enforcement.

Sustainable Downbeach is comprised of Longport, Margate and Ventnor green teams working together to raise awareness about sustainability issues.
