The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC) has initiated a public comment period to seek feedback on expanding cannabis edibles in the state.

The comment period began on October 16, 2023, and will continue until December 15, 2023.

The NJ-CRC welcomes input from the public, industry stakeholders, and interested parties regarding the proposed rules. Currently, traditional cannabis edibles like pot brownies are not available in the legal adult-use cannabis market in New Jersey.

Lozenges were initially permitted and eventually paved the way for the introduction of “soft lozenges” or gummies.

Long Awaited New Jersey Cannabis Edibles Arriving

New Jersey’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC) is proposing regulations for the production and sale of cannabis edibles. According to NJ-CRC Executive Director Jeff Brown, cannabis edibles offer a convenient method for adults to access cannabis.

The proposed regulations aim to establish guidelines for the responsible production, labeling, and sale of these products.

The permitted cannabis edible products in New Jersey will include items that do not require cooking, baking, or storage in sterile environments. This includes syrups, single-serve beverages, pills, capsules, tablets, oral suspensions, chocolates, gummies, baked goods, butters, jams, and jellies.

The demand for cannabis edibles in New Jersey has been a longstanding concern for cannabis advocates. This issue arose when the NJ-CRC implemented interim rules in 2021. Critics argued that the absence of edibles hindered the growth of the legal cannabis market in the state.

The NJ-CRC spokesperson assures that proposed edible rules will enhance variety, safety, and quality.

However, smaller women-owned businesses have encountered barriers preventing them from participating in the legal market, leading them to remain as underground operators.
