Highly Questionable Margate Planning Board Decisions

Watch video.

Using overhead drone photography, we discover the entire structure that contains Sunrise Wine & Tequila Bar and Tony Baloney’s was gutted. An entire wall looks to have been taken down as well.

As we understand it, once you remove walls, it’s game over? Must builders follow new set of rules?

Maybe some land use experts can share their opinion on this issue. Please comment below.

Neighbors claim they were kept in the dark as to the full extent of the project.

It’s true that the Sunrise business / structure is located within a Margate commercial business district, but there’s a significant detail that’s not getting enough attention.

There’s a difference between retail operating during the day, and outdoor party decks with live music operating into the night.

Project looks to have a bare minimum of set back. Will trash, delivery trucks, parking and noise cause issues for neighbors?

Are Margate residents OK with the Planning and Zoning board blocking live ZOOM video of their meetings? In addition, Margate officials prohibit remote public comment from 75% of their tax base, even though cost and tech are no longer a challenge.

Interesting. Controversial Margate Planning Board decisions quietly made in the off-season. After Labor Day, most residents head back to their primary home. Snowbirds fly to south to their Florida home.

Margate Planning Board doesn’t want 2nd homeowners to see how the ‘sausage is made’?

For years, Lamberti’s on Amherst has been a text book example of questionable oversight and waterfront development. Projects like these can seriously impact neighbors, public space and taxpayer liability.

Former Margate Commissioner John Amodeo can provide some insight here.

Note: the Margate Planning Board is controlled by Mayor Michael Collins.

  1. Why should the city cater to 2nd homeowners and snowbirds? The permanent year-round residents deserve a bigger say of what happens. They are the ones that showed up to the meeting and overwhelmingly supported Sunrise.

    1. Cater to second homeowners? As in the miserable old locals who do nothing but whine, complain and allege corruption but STILL barely got out to vote – and then reelect the incumbents? You mean like that ?

Margate Planning Board needs investigation into clearly problematic decisions. Shame on Mayor Collins.

  3. Whether a comment comes from a year-round resident or from a snowbird, it is hard to comment if the planning board does not allow ‘all’ concerns to be brough up, discussed and answered. Both FT and PT residents have valid concerns. Our elected officials are to represent the best decision for the city, within the existing zoning ordinances, for the city and all residents. Full disclosure makes for a project to proceed, be accepted, have a clean approval process and clean path forward for the city and residents.

  4. The city doesn’t need to cater to cater to snowbirds or summer residents it needs to respect our opinions and ideas. I feel it is time to allow a representative who is a summer resident to be on the board so we may have a say in what’s going on in a city where we pay an estimated 80 percent of the taxes

Welcome to Margate, where the governing body can care less what the public wants. Lamberti’s is the Becker administrations tombstone.

Sunrise Wine and Tequila Bar / Liquor Store has three parking spots? How about the skeleton of the once commercial building?

The road diet. Biggest waste of tax dollars to fix a problem that was never a problem.

The royal court of Margate is a family affair. Owner of Colmar hardware is one of the members of the Planning Board that approved all of this mess.

The mayor, Mike Collins is proudly carrying on the tradition of ‘pay to play’.

Is everyone on the take? Just be a good citizen and keep your mouth shut and head down.
