Judge Stops Margate Dune & Beach Disaster For 7 Days

AUDIO > Margate never gave up and they STOPPED THE BULLDOZERS. Well, for at least 7 days…but that’s a real good start.

‘Put every last grain of sand back where it came from’.

A 7 day cease operations was handed down by Judge Mendez on AUG 3, effective FRIDAY AUG 4. The temporary dune & beach work stoppage will remain in effect until at least Friday, August 11.

NJ DEP, US Army Corps of Engineers must resolve the flooding issues between new dunes and bulkhead. Next court date: AUG 11.

Superior Court Judge Julio Mendez thoughts pics of large beach ponds of water on the Margate beaches were ‘horrendous and alarming’.

The controversial dune work is part of a Gov Christie’s ‘one-size-fits-all’ effort to protect the state’s 127 miles of coastline following Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

Opponents to Christie’s dune & beach plan is nothing more than a $63 million money grab, using fear and bully tactics.

According to Philly.com’s Amy Rosenberg: Judge Mendez said: “I have a lot of hesitation about doing this project in the middle of the summer. It impacts the economy & enjoyment of beach, and those who rely on the summer for their livelihood.”

Blumberg: I want stagnant lagoons filled in…and dunes graded down, back to the ocean…the way our beaches used to be.

Margate closed beaches from Fredericksburg to Gladstone Ave. That’s due to bacteria in the standing water and mud between the new dunes and bulkheads.

Steven Erlbaum wants the dunes to be knocked down, otherwise…this is a failure. Let’s lie down on the beach, and stop the bulldozers.

Two Margate lifeguards were being treated for bacterial infections. One Atlantic City lifeguard told DownbeachBUZZ that they needed to call in sick last week due to feeling lethargic. They believe it was because of contaminated surf.

Ventnor and Atlantic City both have pooling issues between dunes and bulkheads. The contaminated waters on this part of Absecon Island are mainly hidden by the boardwalk.

Note: Two separate, dredge & dune building crews have been operating on Absecon Island for the past 2 months. Ventor could see the AC crews reach Jackson Ave by later in August.
