Margate City-Wide Dredging Permit Update

Margate Back Channels

Significant milestones have been reached in Margate’s effort to launch a much needed, back-bay dredge project.

For past 7 years. Back n forth. Not easy getting permission and permits from DEP and Army Corp of Engineers.

Margate Solicitor John Scott Abbott explains:

McLarnon & Abbott

A city-wide dredging permit. Both city and private property owners of Margate will benefit for the next 10 years.

Dredging? It was a hard ‘NO’ at one time, all due to protecting shellfish habitat. Massive testing was required. Stockton hired to analyze spoils, identify contents and contaminants.

A tremendous accomplishment.

Next step: Restore wetlands if allowed to fill dredge hole with spoils. Take dredge materials (spoils) to Shelter Island dredge hole. 28 ft deep. Hole shared with Ventnor.

  1. So the mud flat created by the washing away of the man made island and now fills in the entire bayfront from Nassau Lagoon to the Margate bridge will not be dredged !!!!!!! And MAYBE a small channel will be dredged !!!!!! This is pure insanity .
