Ventnor Crackdown on Dog Scofflaws

After several dog attacks last year, Ventnor Mayor Beth Holtzman is threatening aggressive police enforcement of the local, city dog ordinance.

Ventnor Commissioners met on Feb. 10 to discuss. Watch video.

People don’t seem to want to get their dogs licensed says the Ventnor Mayor. Currently, there’s 140 licenses out there. I dare to say there’s even more than 1,000 dogs. A lot of homes have two dogs.

Mayor Holtzman reminded 2nd homeowners & visitors with dogs, they must bring proof of vaccination and a valid dog license from their primary residence.

Some Ventnor Dog Laws:

  • Dogs must be vaccinated and be current with a rabies vaccination.
  • Dogs must be on a leash.
  • Dogs are never allowed on the boardwalk.
  • During summer, dogs allowed on beach at water’s edge between 7p to 9p.
  • Commissioner Lance Landgraf: Non-stop barking dogs. That’s a noise violation.

We are going to start enforcing local dog ordinance.

Ventnor Mayor Holtzman
  • Annual fee to register a vaccinated spayed / neutered dog: $10, due Jan. 1.
  • Non-spayed or non-neutered dog: $13.
  • Add late fee of $10 starting March 1.

Ventnor offering a free rabies clinic: 10a til noon, Sat, Feb. 19. Ventnor Firehouse on New Haven and Winchester Ave. Dogs can get vaccination and get registered for a license as well.

  1. Glad enforcement of NO DOGS ON BOARDWALK will be done. Needed in summer especially in evenings after sundown. Many people walking dogs on Boardwalk last summer evenings.

      1. The new signs on the boardwalk permit dogs by waters edge without time restrictions. So is it anytime if day or only 7p-9p ???

  2. Margate should enforce the same dog laws. Some residents walk their dog without a leash and some don’t cleanup their waste.

  3. Dogs on the beach without leashes, owners nowhere to be seen a real problem. Dogs on the Boardwalk a BIG problem ! Ventnor and Margate share the dogs on the beach problem. Both towns, please enforce the law !!

  4. Just last week taking a wonderful stroll with my hubby on Ventnor Bkwlk. Came upon
several presents left on Bdwlk. by dogs!!! Utterly disgusting POOP for several blocks..
People brazenly walking dogs on Bdwlk… If you say anything they actually have the
nerve to get nasty with YOU…Like you are doing the wrong..

    1. Agree 100%…some dog owners don’t pick up after themselves and if that alone causing enforcement, so be it. Tired of people walking their dogs with the extended leashes and we have to stop running to jump over the leash and then hear a nasty comment from the dog owner….

  5. Seems like some people with dogs feel so entitled that it’s beneath them to pick up their dogs poop! I’ve had it on my lawn many mornings after the night walkers let it loose on others to pick up! I actually caught a guy last summer with no bag let his dog dump on my lawn as I walked out the door. I told him to please pick it up and he got ugly with me! SMH! People really suck around here anymore (summer is the worst). Rules would be great, if they are enforced, but the entitled snobs feel the rules don’t apply to them.

  6. Yes, agree there are way too many dogs on the boardwalk & this is in the summer too. Can’t the city afford one policeman to patrol the boardwalk & give out some tickets? Let’s get this done already.

  7. Mayor Holtzman, the dogs on Boardwalk issue is important. However, without enforcement, nothing will change.

Another safety issue that must be addressed: speeding bikes. I have walked among large crowds during the summer when bikers are thinking they’re on the Indianapolis Speedway.

    Someone will get hurt.

I agree with the comments above. I use the ramp to get up to the boardwalk since I have a disability. The ramp was disgusting with dog waste. Bikes are speeding by you and I fear getting run down while walking the boards.

Ventnor can give millions to AC for their inadequate officials and staff but does not have any one to monitor and ticket offenders not obeying the rules.

The Boardwalks used to be a pleasure to sit, walk, jog, bike ride during permitted times; now it’s a safety hazzard.

Officials! Don’t just talk about it, do something! I respect people and their dogs but they do not seem to consider others who use the same walkways and Boardwalks for simple pleasure.
